On June 1, 2025, Hong Kong Customs intercepted a major drug trafficking attempt at Hong Kong International Airport, seizing approximately 18 kilograms of suspected cocaine, with an estimated market value of around $15 million. Two passengers—a 22-year-old male and a 16-year-old female arriving from Johannesburg, South Africa—were arrested during customs clearance.
The cocaine was found inside their carry-on suitcases, spread across 18 packets. Authorities emphasized that trafficking in dangerous drugs carries severe penalties under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, including fines up to $5 million and life imprisonment.
Hong Kong Customs continues to apply a risk-based approach, focusing on passengers from high-risk regions and leveraging intelligence to combat transnational drug trafficking. The department also urges the public not to carry unknown items for others and to report any suspected drug trafficking through its 24-hour hotline or online reporting channels.
Cases like this underscore the critical need for advanced detection technologies at airports. The SAUST EU-funded Project is developing high-resolution vapour screening technology to enhance the detection of illicit substances in baggage.
