Recent incidents at European airports highlight the ongoing challenges in detecting illicit substances. In May 2024, six suspects were arrested at Manchester Airport, with four formally charged, for attempting to smuggle cocaine. This case underscores how current screening systems can be bypassed and reveals critical regulatory and enforcement gaps at EU borders.

The SAUST EU-funded Project is tackling these challenges head-on. Our vapour screening technology enables non-intrusive, high-resolution detection of illicit substances in baggage, providing a scalable solution to enhance detection accuracy and streamline airport operations.

By improving screening reliability, SAUST aims to support the development of standardized EU-wide protocols, helping airports detect threats more effectively and ensuring safer travel across Europe.
